To Blog or Not to Blog

We frequently get asked if our client’s “should be blogging” and our answer is always YES!

Everyone has heard about blogging, most have been on a blog – but is it for you? If you want an easy way to connect with your clients while helping your search engine ranking, then YES you should be blogging.

Blogs (formally web logs) started in the late 90′s as basic online diaries for people to write about daily activities or current events.  It didn’t take long for blogging software to be developed and more and more people started to write online.  As the software became easier to post, the popularity grew. People were able to create pages and links on their “blog” without having to understand html. Most blogs helped others figure out how to do something or gave ideas about subjects.

Today, the door is wide open!  There is no right or wrong subject to blog about, no length requirement and certainly no … its your blog – do what you want.  Blogging has come a long way in the last 10 years. People have really taken their blogs seriously and have put together some great resources. The next time you do a Google search, look a little closer. You might be surprised to find some of the listings are actually blog articles.

Reasons to Start Blogging

  1. You become a credible source in the industry you want.  All you need to do is write about your everyday activities and common knowledge you have gained over the years at your job and you can become an online author.  Make sure to sign all of your posts with links to your you bio on your website.  When people search for your name, your blog articles should come up and you will naturally gain respect.
  2. Great way to grow your business. It seems weird but you can increase your business through a blog.  All you need to do is advertise your services in each of your posts. Include a phone number, a link to your website, even publish your specials on your blog.  Don’t be surprised the next time someone calls and they found you on your blog!
  3. Improve your Search Engine Rankings. If there is one reason to blog, this is it! Everyone wants to rank on the first page of Google for their products or services… here’s how to do it.  The great thing about blogging is you have the power over the content.  You can write about topics related to your industry and create links to your website with your keywords.  Our Denver SEO company blogs all the time for our clients and we have had great success with it.  (Make sure to understand about creating links before you waste your time and do it incorrectly. Read this article about the different types of links.)  Links from blogs are great as they are from a related source, you have control over the anchor text and you can link to multiple pages on your website in one post.
  4. Create a personal Voice for yourself.  You may not be a company owner, you may be a salesman or saleswoman and want to differentiate yourself from the rest of the industry. You do not always have to promote your company, in a blog you get to promote yourself and your knowledge on a subject. Also, someone is more likely to buy something from you if they find you.
  5. Branding Strategy. You can help promote your company with a blog to as well.  Someone once told me you need to see something three different ways before you remember it.  One could be your website, one could be a phone book ad and one could be your blog! Create a header similar to your website’s header and add it to your blog. Include a phone number and an about us section. This will all help your company develop positive relations with others.

So my list could go on and on for reasons to blog.  These are a few of the more important reasons, don’t waste more time – go out and create a blog today!

SEO For the Ipad

I found this great article on SEmoz.org which was written by about optimizing techniques for Apple’s popular Ipad.  His article not only touches on the great benefits of owning an ipad, he also helps those trying to optimize their website.  He touches on site speed, flash, apps, tabbing and much more.  ENJOY!

- Denver SEO Company

“When the iPad first came out, like many people, I didn’t really get it. My initial thoughts were something along the lines of “Steve… what the hell?! You’ve produced a giant iPod and are somehow trying to claim its some sort of brilliant new product.” I resolved never to buy one, considering it simply a folly for overly wealthy businessmen or an iPod designed for the visually impaired.

18 months later, a lot of words have had to be eaten with very little garnish or dressing. Now the proud owner of an iPad 2, I consider the tablet to be the coolest gadget ever made and the piece of technology I use most at home and when out and about.

My belief is that the form-factor of the tablet PC will become the primary device for personal computing over the coming decade and will form conduit for the bulk of consumer search queries.”  [ Read the Entire Article ]

Different Types of Links

Link building is crucial to any SEO campaign which is why its important to understand the different types of links you can create to improve your search engine rankings.  There are five types of links I want to touch on; inward, internal, external, reciprocal and deep links.

The Basic Inward Link:

This is the most important type of link when it comes to optimizing your website as it helps increase your site’s relevance and PageRank. An inward link is simply one that is created from another internet property such as another website, blog, directory or social networking site. An inward link can be created both organically or manually.

The Internal Link:

It is important to have more than one way to get to various pages of your website, an internal link is created to help guide your visitors to other parts of your site besides using the main menu. They are great as you can use anchor text to tell the search engines (and your visitors) what the page is about.  It is always good to have at least one internal link on every page of your website to another page allowing easier navigation to your visitors.

The External Link:

Simply put, an external link is a link from your website to another website.  This link can be used to help build relevance for your website by linking it to other relevant sites. This is useful as it will help the people who are visiting your website.

If you are concerned with losing your PageRank you can always add the “nofollow” attribute on the link. (If you do not know what the “nofollow” link attribute is click here).

I would always recommend having some followed external links as not doing so would look very unnatural. Google will see your site more valuable if you offer some external sources to your visitors.

The Reciprocal Link:

A reciprocal link is two inward links from different properties that link to each other. This type of link is normally used as a trade to help two different SEO campaigns.  One site will link to another on the condition that they link back to their site. This can still be useful but only if the website is relevant to yours and will be of value to your website visitors.

The Deep Link:

Deep linking is the practice of creating a link which goes directly to a page other than your home page of your site. Say you write a blog post and you have a few keywords that deal with your company’s services.  You could have a deep link like reputation management go to a page that deals with that content on your site – exactly how I just did.

Keyword-Level Demographics

Written by: (From SEOmoz)

On Tuesday I made my speaking debut at SMX East 2011 on a panel with Lena Flanigan (Life Technologies) and the creator of Google Webmaster Tools Vanessa Fox (Nine by Blue). The session was called “Using Searcher Personas to Connect Search to Conversions” and I unveiled a methodology that I think is potentially game changing. Now I want to share this breakthrough with the community that has helped me build a name for myself. As you can tell from my tone and lack of cartoons in this one, I have my serious hat on right now! Without further adieu ladies and gentlemen of the SEOmoz community I present to you Keyword Level Demographics.

Keyword-Level Demographics Methodology

At MozCon Mat Clayton from MixCloud delivered a mind-blowing presentation called Social Design: How to Co-Mingle Social Features & Earn Traffic in which he revealed that if you add your site as an object on Facebook’s OpenGraph and a user then opts-in you are able to get all of their data. That’s right. Status updates, interests, friend – all of it. I immediately understood how that could affect conversion, in fact Mat told us that their application of this resulted in a decrease in bounce rate of 55% and an 80% increase of signups. Wow!

I’m not quite sure when the idea hit me—and hit me it did—but one day I realized that if you can pull a user’s data from Facebook and couple it with Referrers from Search the result is demographics at a keyword level! (Read the rest of the article)

Its Important to Be Unique

You should always ensure that your website’s copy is unique and not duplicate anywhere else on the internet.  This means that each of your pages should be one of a kind and not duplicated throughout your site.  This is an ongoing task as others may copy your content so keeping it fresh (especially your home or landing pages) is very important!

Your web pages should all be relevant to your site’s theme and you should use them to target different keywords. Each page is unique and you should target that pge to canvass certain keywords.  It is worth noting that not all of your visitors will enter your site through your home page. Especially if you are running a search engine optimization campaign, you will want to optimize different landing pages for certain keywords.  This is easier and more effective to convert your traffic to customers if the page content is relevant to what they are searching for.

Google has a complex and sophisticated algorithm that is more than capable of spotting duplicated content. If it find this, the pages will not be added to its database and they will be ignored. This would totally defeat the objective of having created them in the first place. It is also worth noting that you should not, in any case, copy content from other websites and duplicate it without the website owner’s permission.

Google checks for duplication for several reasons including:

  • Keeping their results relevant
  • Preventing copy theft
  • Ensuring search results are delivered quickly
  • Avoiding duplicated results
  • Provide their visitors optimal results
  • Provide their visitors with most updated results Read more

4 Tips for Creating Link Bait

Written by: Geoff Kenyon (Distilled)
While link bait is frequently seen as more “fun”, and it’s definitely more creative, than doing things like guest blogging or emailing people asking for links, it has its challenges. I wanted to share a few things I’ve learned about creating link bait from my experiences. If you have other insights, I’d love to hear them in the comments.

Keep a Tight Scope

In most cases you will want to keep your content extremely focused around your target, or the person that you are going to get to link to you (Justin wrote more about this process here). While it’s tempting to try and cast as wide of a net possible, typically you will be more successful focusing on targeting one or two targets (and shaping the content around these demographics) rather than trying to create content that targets everyone.
While this is really important for a lot of link bait content, there will obviously be exceptions to this rule. A couple examples come to mind (if you can think of others, feel free to leave a note in the comments):
  • If your content or subject really is universally applicable – While this is very rare, there is some content topics that apply to almost everyone on the web. A good example of this would be Facebook; just about everyone on the internet has a Facebook account and has an interest in changes (especially when it involves privacy settings).
  • Creating exhaustive guides – Super in-depth and extensive guides and documents can receive a lot of links if they are done really well. Think about how many links SEOmoz’s Beginners Guide has received.

Understanding Realistic SEO Goals

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

I come across some crazy things sometimes in this industry and I wonder how and why sometimes people feel they deserve to be successful online after one month when other businesses have spent years putting in hard work to build up their brands in the online space. If you are getting involved in the internet marketing space you really need to be realistic with everything surrounding you online.

I hear people say things like I want 500 quality links in the next 2 weeks. Or I need 1000 unique visitors daily fast. Seriously? Come on you need to be realistic. First of all why is it that you deserve these numbers? Have you put in the leg work in your industry to get these types of numbers? Or did you read how search engine optimization SEO helps you with inbound traffic and you assumed you can leap frog the important part of building a business, time. Creating A Personalized Website Plan

Posted by: Tina Johnson (Denver SEO Professional)

The personalization approach that is best for your website depends on the needs of your customers and their level of customer loyalty. For example, a customized website may be the best for your company if it has a uniform customer base and no loyalty. As you increase the use of technology-based tools, you must also provide easy access to people via the high-touch approach.  Human-to-human contact through hot lines, voicemail and e-mail marketing is often critical element in overcoming resistance to high-tech tools for gaining acceptance. A high-touch website with many personalization features may be best for your company if you have a differentiated customer base and a premium loyalty. High-touch refers to a site that provides lots of human-to-human contact with online technology such as “call me” buttons, voice over the internet, or even live text chat.

It is important to remember that internet products and services are constantly being redefined, making them a moving target for online marketers. Today, many online businesses do not have time for an in-depth market research program and testing. Often times the bring ideas to the market to stay ahead of the competition. Building the personalization of a website takes vision, planning and a good understanding of what works online and what does not.  Here are six crutial steps to creating a personalized website:

1.) Understand What Your Are Selling. The first step you need to do is identify what it is you want to sell. For an online travel agency, the product may be travel reservations but what people are really buying is the easy-to-use online services to speed up their planning process. Think about what you are trying to sell to your website visitors before any other planning.

2.) Identify Your Customers. The next step is taking the time to focus on your desired website customers. Who does your website really need to communicate with?  Sure, the office manager may make the actual order of sign the check but the actual visitor may be someone else in the company. Read more

10 Google Ranking Factors Your Should Know

Writing by Nick Stamoulis  (Brick Marketing)

People don’t really understand that there are many different factors that fall into place when determining where a website ranks in the Google search engine results. Some things to keep in mind when you are wondering why your site doesn’t rank well. It is not always just the obvious reasons that are holding it back.

Over the past years by reading Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, Google SEO Starter Guide, many other industry blogs and by actually doing professional SEO and internet marketing since the late 1990’s, I have gathered data and come to a boiled down short list of the most important Google search engine ranking factors.

Here is the list of my top 10 of important Google SEO ranking factors to consider:

1. Age of Domain: Age of URL is very important. If you just bought your domain a few weeks or even months ago you have a long road ahead of you. The reality is the age of your website helps build trust. If your website has been online for several years, chances are you have an established business.

2. Domain Hosting: Where is your site hosted? Find out through your hosting company what continent or country your site is hosted in. This can often times play a large role in search rankings. Always use a reputable hosting company. If your company is US based then use a hosting company in the United States. Also, I always recommend a dedicated IP when you can. There are virtual dedicated and cloud hosting solutions that are more affordable. Never use the cheapest hosting. The reality is, if you cannot afford hosting you should re-consider the business…I know this is harsh but very true. :)

3. Your Neighbors: If you have a virtual server, which sites like Godaddy usually are have been known to house hundreds of websites on one server. Make sure that your neighbors on your server are not classified as spam.

4. URL Structure: Make sure your URL structures are very clean. There should not be any random strings of characters at the end of your URL’s. This is part of the onsite search engine optimization process as well. [ Read the Rest of the Article ]
